Doing the Math
Endre Szemerédi—the State of New Jersey Professor of Computer Science and an associate member of the Department of Mathematics in the School of Arts and Sciencesreceived the very prestigious Abel Prize for his contributions to the understanding of mathematics and computer science. The committee issuing the award, which comes with a gift of $1 million, cited Szemerédi for providing “fundamental contributions to discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science.” The prize, created in 2003 and issued by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, is given each year, making Szemerédi, also a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the 10th recipient of the prize, which he received during a ceremony in Oslo, Norway, this month.
