A common sight 50 years ago at the College Avenue Gymnasium (The Barn) at Rutgers University–New Brunswick was senior Jimmy Valvano driving the lane en route to leading the Scarlet Knights to the National Invitation Tournament during the 1966–67 season. The effervescent Valvano RC’67* went on to have a successful career as a college basketball coach and sports broadcaster. But then tragedy struck when he died of bone cancer in 1993. One of his last gestures was to found with ESPN the V Foundation for Cancer Research, which his backcourt partner and close friend Bob Lloyd RC’67* managed for two decades. On April 29, athletic  director Patrick Hobbs presided over an emotional dedication ceremony to name the basketball court in honor of the late Valvano as his family, former teammates, and Rutgers community paid tribute to Jimmy V.
