Gina Roselle Broschart, right, and Nancy Lee, left, didn’t know each other at Rutgers—but when they met as coworkers at a Somerset, New Jersey, catering company in 2009, they quickly learned they had a lot in common. Both trained at prestigious culinary schools after college, and both still felt a strong scarlet connection. In 2014, their dual expertise and passion for baking and pastry-making led them to cofound The Vintage Cake, an Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, venue at which they create beautifully designed wedding cakes and other delicious works of art.

The Vintage Cake also offers classes for baking enthusiasts. In February, as part of the RUAA’s ongoing Alumni on Location event series, Broschart CC’06 and Lee RC’07 hosted Rutgers graduates and their friends and families. All 25 spots for the get-together were filled within a week of its announcement.

“Everyone was so excited to be there and so happy for us, and it was such a wonderful way to meet people,” says Broschart. She and Lee affectionately called the evening of cream puff-making and wine-sipping “Bordeaux and Bake” (they provided the lesson and ingredients while the wine was bring-your-own). The chefs were so pleased with the outcome that they are considering a repeat event.

They’ve also renewed their commitment to keeping up with the Rutgers family. “I didn’t know about these Alumni on Location events until we had ours, but there’s a huge variety of them,” says Lee. “Now I really want to go to ones that other alumni are presenting.”
