Caffeine and another coffee compound may help fight Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia.
Caffeine and another compound found in coffee could help fight Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia. M. Maral Mouradian, a neurology professor and founding director of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Institute for Neurological Therapeutics, was the lead author of a study demonstrating that a fatty acid derivative of the neurotransmitter serotonin, found in the bean’s waxy coating, was effective when combined with caffeine in fighting brain degeneration. When given together, the two elements boost the activity of a catalyst in the brain that helps prevent the accumulation of harmful proteins. The discovery was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
