New Jersey Medical School is now leading the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s Office, which investigates causes of unusual or suspicious deaths, such as homicides, inmate deaths, workplace accidents, and sudden infant deaths. The office also provides expert testimony in civil and criminal court cases. The five-year contract between the New Jersey county and the medical school is the first of its kind in the state. The school’s Department of Pathology, Immunology, and Laboratory Medicine has appointed to the office two board-certified forensic pathologists, with one serving as the county’s chief medical examiner. The new partnership allows the medical examiner’s office to serve as a teaching site in the school’s residency program in pathology and for population health and forensic medicine research.
