Hepatitis, the “silent killer” that claims 20,000 lives in the United States each year, could be practically eliminated if federal and state agencies put more focus on bringing services to marginalized viral hepatitis patients, according to Brian L. Strom. He is the chancellor of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences and an epidemiologist who headed a committee of scientists selected by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to make recommendations. The cost of a vaccine for hepatitis B (HBV) and antiviral drugs for hepatitis C (HCV), now prohibitively expensive, must drop, too.
