Rutgers University–Newark is teaming up with other public, private, and nonprofit anchor institutions in Newark to form Hire.Buy.Live.Newark, an ambitious effort to provide jobs to more Newark residents and procure more goods and services from Newark businesses. One facet of the initiative, “Newark 2020,” intends to hire 2,020 unemployed Newarkers by 2020, with Rutgers–Newark and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences aiming for 220 new workers from the city. “In a city, state, and nation where inequalities increasingly map to race and class, anchor institutions [must] join together and collaborate with public leaders to forge a new path forward,” says Nancy Cantor, chancellor of Rutgers University–Newark.
