No Room for Debate

The Rutgers University–Newark Debate Team won the Cross Examination Debate Association National Tournament and the National Debate Tournament—only the second team in U.S. collegiate debate history to do so in the same year. Devane Murphy, far left, and Nicole Nave, far right, both rising juniors at the School of Public Affairs and Administration, led the way to the twin victories over close to 200 universities. “It is hard to overstate the magnitude of this achievement,” says Nancy Cantor, the Rutgers–Newark chancellor, who joined Newark mayor Ras J. Baraka at City Hall on May 3 to honor Murphy and Nave, both Newark natives.
