President Robert Barchi recently raised the minimum wage for student workers from $8.44 to $11 an hour to help the 13,000 or so students who must work in trying to make ends meet. Despite Rutgers’ ongoing efforts to hold the line on tuition costs, the expense of attending college isn’t getting any easier. “We  must … be cognizant of the delicate balance these students must achieve between time spent in their work and on their studies,” Barchi says. “More time committed to employment often lengthens their  time to degree and further increases overall student cost.”
