The Scarlet Knights men's basketball team was far more competitive last year, with more to come.
Under first-year head coach Steve Pikiell, the 2016–2017 Scarlet Knights men’s basketball team was a vast improvement over the team’s previous season, even though they played the second-toughest conference schedule in the Big Ten. There is reason for optimism.
• More than doubled their win total (15) and tripled conference wins.
• Improved in offensive and defensive rebounds, defense, field goal percentage on defense, and blocked shots.
• 9-1 start was the best head-coaching debut in Rutgers men’s basketball history.
• Posted an undefeated home record in nonconference play.
• 10 Big Ten games were decided in single digits after losing 15 conference games by double digits.
• Out-rebounded opponents in 11 of 18 conference games after being out-rebounded by teams in three games.
