Stadiums were built for entertaining sports fans, not handling terrorist threats. But that is the reality facing alumnus Sylvester Servance, director of security for the Washington Nationals baseball team. “We try to think like a criminal so we can stay ahead of anything that might happen,” says Servance RC’03, who supervises a 20-person staff that swells to a game-day crew of more than 200 ushers and security and first-aid personnel. A sure defense? Fans, his best eyes for spotting suspicious behavior. “We get calls about unattended bags and send a canine unit to investigate,” says Servance, who married Millissa Hare DC’05 in 2008. “Thankfully, nothing nefarious has happened.”
