Wrestling phenoms Nick Suriano, left, and Anthony Ashnault made Rutgers history on March 23 when each of them won a national title at the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling championships, held at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. Suriano beat No. 1 seed Daton Fix of Oklahoma State in an overtime match to claim the 133-pound title, while Ashnault SAS’18, EJB’18 upset No. 2 seed Micah Jordan of Ohio State to earn the 149-pound crown and complete his undefeated season. With 51.5 points, the Scarlet Knights finished ninth in the team standings, its first top-10 team finish at the national tournament. Rutgers was one of only two programs to have multiple individual champions this season as head coach Scott Goodale was named the National Tournament Coach of the Year. “What an unbelievable accomplishment for Nick and Anthony as well as for this program,” Goodale said. “These two showed that titles can be won right here at Rutgers.”
