Professor Mary Rizzo unearths a forgotten Baltimore publication that was the voice of the city's residents.
From 1966 to 1983, Chicory magazine gave voice to the poetry, prose, and artwork of Baltimore residents living in its poorest precincts. Published by the Enoch Pratt Free Library, Chicory was all but forgotten—until Mary Rizzo, an assistant professor at Rutgers University–Newark who was researching a book about Baltimore, came upon it. Now, Rizzo, also the associate director of Public and Digital Humanities Initiatives, has partnered with the library to digitize back issues for the website Digital Maryland. “Chicory offers us a rare historical look inside these communities,” she says. “Many of the topics it addresses are still relevant today.”
