Newest Americans, “an experiment in collaborative storytelling,” enlists media-makers, artists, faculty, and students to present evocative multimedia accounts of today’s immigrant experience. It’s part of the Center for Migration and the Global City as well as the Department of Arts, Culture, and Media at Rutgers University–Newark. Many of its students, having arrived from around the globe, are now living and learning and striving in a city built on immigrants, one that has been “a crucible for the construction of new American identities,” as associate professor Tim Raphael, the center’s director and the executive producer of Newest Americans, puts it. A new entry in the series—“Gateways to Newark”—reveals the making of a mile-long mural in Newark and the artists behind it. Visit newestamericans.com/gateways-to-newark.
