Alumna Nancy Mercado—poet, writer, educator, and environmentalist—received the 2017 American Book Award for Lifetime Achievement. Mercado RC’82 was part of the second wave of the Nuyorican Movement, an association of New York City-based Puerto Rican poets, musicians, and artists. Mercado, known for her poetry collection It Concerns the Madness, is active with Eco-Poetry.org, which inspires action to fight global warming. The American Book Awards, sponsored by the Before Columbus Foundation, recognize outstanding achievement throughout America’s diverse literary community.
